How to Write a Resume That Actually Gets Interviews

Recruiters spend an average of seven seconds scanning a resume before deciding whether to read further. Your resume needs to pass that seven-second test while also beating applicant tracking systems that filter out 75 percent of applications before a human ever sees them.

Format for Scannability

Use a clean, single-column layout with clear section headers. Avoid graphics, tables, columns, and fancy fonts — ATS software often cannot parse them correctly.

**Must-have sections in order:**

1. Contact information (name, phone, email, LinkedIn, city/state)

2. Professional summary (two to three sentences)

3. Work experience (reverse chronological)

4. Skills

5. Education

Skip the objective statement. Nobody cares what you want. They care what you can do for them.

Write a Killer Professional Summary

Your summary is the first thing a recruiter reads. Make it count.

Bad: "Hardworking professional seeking a challenging opportunity to leverage my skills."

Good: "Marketing manager with 6 years of experience driving B2B lead generation. Increased qualified pipeline by 140% at [Company] through content marketing and paid acquisition. Specializing in SaaS and technology verticals."

Lead with your title, years of experience, and your strongest measurable achievement.

Quantify Everything

Numbers are the single most powerful element on a resume. Compare:

  • "Managed social media accounts" vs "Grew Instagram following from 5K to 85K in 12 months"
  • "Improved sales" vs "Increased quarterly revenue by $430K through new outbound strategy"
  • "Led a team" vs "Led 8-person engineering team that shipped 3 products on schedule"
  • If you cannot find exact numbers, estimate reasonably. "Approximately" is better than no number at all.

    Beat the ATS

Applicant tracking systems scan for keywords from the job description. For every application:

    1. Read the job posting carefully

    2. Identify the key skills, tools, and qualifications mentioned

    3. Mirror that language naturally in your resume

    4. Do not keyword-stuff — ATS software detects that too

    Tailor for Each Application

A generic resume gets generic results. Customize your professional summary and top bullet points for each role. This takes 10 to 15 minutes per application and dramatically increases your callback rate.

    Common Mistakes That Kill Applications

  • Typos and grammatical errors (instant rejection for many recruiters)
  • Including every job you have ever had (keep it relevant, last 10-15 years)
  • Using passive language ("was responsible for" instead of "led" or "built")
  • Listing duties instead of achievements
  • Making it longer than two pages without senior executive experience
  • Design Matters (But Less Than You Think)

A visually appealing resume helps in creative fields. For most roles, clean formatting and strong content win. Do not sacrifice ATS compatibility for design.
